The main function of the guide elements is to guide the piston and rod in a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder and to support the loads that occur during the operation of the equipment. At the same time, they must avoid metal-to-metal contact that could damage surfaces, cause damage to other components and lead to leakage in the cylinder.

Several materials are available such as filled PTFE (normally with graphite or bronze additives), resin laminated fabric and filled polyamide PA, depending on the working conditions. All offer high wear resistance and excellent friction reducing properties.
